Father, son plead guilty to large-scale drug scheme in Rhode Island

A West Warwick, Rhode Island father and son have pleaded guilty to drug charges in Virginia, where state police troopers in March found 480 pounds of marijuana in their tractor-trailer.

Police in Virginia said that the men were hauling a truckload of tomatoes when they tried to bypass a weigh-in station. Drug-sniffing dogs then found the marijuana.

Ralph E. Corey, 44, pleaded guilty in November to transporting drugs and is scheduled for a pre-sentencing hearing next month. His father, Manuel V. Corey, 75, pleaded guilty in December to possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and is scheduled for a pre-sentencing hearing in March.

According to an article in The Roanoke Times, the younger Corey told investigators that the stash belonged to him; the elder Corey said he hadn't known anything about the drugs. The men had been heading from Arizona to Rhode Island.

Under a plea agreement, Manuel Corey signed his truck and nearly $17,000 in cash over to the state, the newspaper reported. Prosecutors are asking that he serve no more than two years in prison. Ralph Corey could face up to 10 years.

The Coreys' arrest in March was linked to a string of drug seizures and another arrest in Rhode Island. Barney F. Freedline, 49, of 78 Mawney Ave., Warwick, was arrested by the Warwick police in March and ordered held without bail. Those charges are still pending.

In October, Freedline was also charged with three drug-dealing counts in U.S. District Court, Providence. He pleaded guilty to the charges in November, and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
