Rhode Island teen accused of cocaine smuggling

A 16-year-old Rhode Island girl could face up to 25 years to life in prison -- on charges of smuggling thousands of dollars worth of cocaine.

Officials say Kathy Pimental of Rhode Island was arrested Monday at Kennedy Airport in New York. They say a customs inspector found the cocaine in her bag when she was stopped for a routine check. The Rhode Island teen was returning home from the Dominican Republic, where she had been visiting her parents. The teenager lives with her aunt in Rhode Island.

Pimental told authorities that three men had given her the suitcase at the airport in Santo Domingo after one of her own bags broke. She said she didn't know there were drugs inside.

A prosecutor says drug traffickers "stop at nothing" -- including using children and teenagers as couriers.
